Letter : to G.S. Winslow, 1863 Jan 14.

Hughes thanks G.S. Winslow for ordering "another Pic[ture] of Rubens" for his friend Mr. Hutchinson, which was sent with this letter. He has taken "the liberty of making a slight alteration in the picture by throwing a cloak over the balustrade because it gives richness to the subject." Given the difficulties of having "so small a photograph to work from," he must charge 30 dollars for it. In the postscript Hughes asks his patron to "protect this Pic with a board the same size on each side." Dated from Dorchester, 1863 Jan 14. Signed Ball Hughes.

The sculptor Robert Ball Hughes, born in London, studied sculpture at the Royal Academy, where he exhibited in the 1820s. In 1829 he emigrated to the United States, settling in New York. Hughes played an important role introducing marble and cast bronze sculpture to America. Around 1840 he moved to Boston. A lack of patronage by the mid-1850s made him switch to minor arts, making cameos, wax portraits and pyrography on wood. From the description of Letter : to G.S. Winslow, 1863 Jan ...
